Chair-tie ~ Part 3 of 3
Once the top of the model’s body is bound tightly, a rope is wrapped around the top of the knees in neat loops, tucked under at the front, between the knees, and cinched tightly. This is usually a shorter piece of rope, and is knotted off in between the knees. The most important thing here is to leave a bit of slack when you are tying the knees, as later, when you tie back the ankles, the knees will need to bend and expand at least by an inch on each side, and if you don’t leave any slack in the knees, the knee ropes will become too tight, your model will be very uncomfortable, especially as one can lose sensation and circulation there pretty fast.
Now the ankles are bound together, much like the way the wrists were – rope is wrapped around the two ankles, binding them together to for a semi-cross form, and the cinched around itself in between the ankles. Again, like when tying the wrists, you want the ropes snug, but not too tight as the extremities tend to lose circulation faster than areas closer to the heart, and you may find yourself with a limping model when she is untied! The excess rope is then pulled back through the bottom of the chair, bending the ankles in a thirty-five to forty-five degree angle (depending again on the type of chair and the flexibility of the model), making sure that the angle is comfortable for the model, and then typing the rope off at the bottom of the chair. Note here that the type of chair used will dictate how you tie your ropes from the model to the chair, so if you like the bent-back sort of look to the legs, you must choose the correct chair for it, preferable with at least one bottom bar at the chair legs. I have also seen people tie off the ankles separately to the two front chair legs when the chair used did not have bars on the bottom, which I suppose is reasonable enough given the equipment used. However, if you like the pointed toe look, pointing the toes when your ankles are bound to chair legs separately and your feet are forced to sit squarely on or just slightly above ground is nearly impossible at best. Remember here we are asking the models to do what is comfortable, and not be super human in trying to pose a certain way that is impossible for them.
At this point, other pieces of rope can be added – for example, a hair rope that braids the model’s hair and pulls it back to either the thick back rope, or maybe tied off to the back of the chair, provided the model’s neck is flexible enough. Or alternately, a rope that is tied around the toes and pulled back to the back bottom bar of the chair if the chair used has one. There are a lot of creative accessorizing that you can do with ropes after the basics are done, depending on the look you are going for. And then you add the appropriate gags and/or blindfolds, and then the photographing and filming begins! xoxo Anna
